The St. Timothy Thunder track and field team could not have asked for better end to their season as they put on a strong showing at the Junior High City Championships on June 11 at Foothills Athletic Park.

The squad was led by two standout performances from Darci Petersen and Elspeth Cooper. Both were crowned Open Schools City Champions (Petersen in the Grade 7 girls 800m and Cooper in the Grade 8 girls 800m).

Petersen’s Grade 7 teammate Grace Boston placed fourth in the 800m and 1,200m, while Emily Carvalho placed fifth in both events.

In the Grade 9 girls distance events, Maggie Brolsma finished sixth in the 1,200m.

Grade 7 boys Liam McCullough and Alex Aguilar placed fourth and sixth respectively in the 1,200m event, while Brenek Spademan had strong fourth place finishes in the Grade 8 boys 800m and 1,200m.

In sprints, four athletes made the 100m final. Damen Agyeman and Liam Hogg finished fourth and sixth in the Grade 8 boys final, Carter Verheul placed sixth in the Grade 7 boys event, and Michelle Conway was seventh in the Grade 9 girls contest.

Agyeman and Hogg bested their 100m results in the 300m as they two captured fifth place and bronze. Verheul also nabbed fourth in the 300m. In girls 300m action, Kennedy King placed sixth in the Grade 7 category.

Julianna Mackenzie had a stellar day, picking up bronze shot put, and did Jacob Mate.

For the second meet in a row, the Thunder relay teams excelled, with the Grade 9 girls (Conway, Riley Wasylyniuk, Mikenna Spademan, and Maggie Brolsma) placing fourth.

The Grade 8 boys side (Hogg, Spademan, Verheul, and Agyeman) took silver as did the Grade 7 boys (Mate, McCullough, Aguilar, and Cole Verheul).

The Grade 8 girls team (Petersen, Boston, Cooper, and Melissa Yeung) – with a few Grade 7s taking part – managed to take a bronze.
