St Timothy High School Thunder athletic award winners pose after the 10th annual Evening with the Thunder on June 1 at the school’s gymnasium. The event honours St Tim’s student athletic achievements from throughout the year with more than 100 awards being given out. Connor McNeice (front row, farthest left) and Alexander Howells (front row, second from left) tied for Senior High Male Athlete of the Year, while Samantha Delsing (front row, second from right) and Amber Meyers (front row, farthest right) both tied for Senior High Female Athlete of the Year.

Spirits were high as St. Timothy High School hosted its 10th annual Evening with the Thunder on June 1 in the school’s gymnasium.

The event honoured all of the Thunder’s athletes, with more than 100 awards being presented in a wide variety of sports the school participates in every year such as track and field, field hockey, soccer, and wrestling to name a few in both senior and junior high school categories.

“This was awesome, I’m honoured to be part of the school and the teams this season,” said Amber Meyers (soccer and field hockey), who was joint Senior High Female Athlete of the Year winner along with Samantha Delsing (field hockey and soccer).

“The coaches and the players make this so special.”

Despite her award, the day was bittersweet for Meyers considering her field hockey team lost the Calgary Senior High School Athletic Association (CSHSAA) City Championship 2-1 in extra time to Lester B. Pearson High School.

“(The loss) was really disappointing, but athletically the school has been very accomplished this year,” she said. “We went to city championship finals in two sports and fell short both times, but it was a major learning experience and an honour to be part of those teams.”

Big winners of the night included Mikenna Spademan (Junior High Female Athlete of the Year), for her prowess in basketball, volleyball, and track and field. Isaiah Springer (Junior High Male Athlete of the Year) was recognized for his talents in basketball, volleyball, and wrestling.

Alexander Howells (track and field) and Connor McNeice (wrestling) were joint winners of the Senior High Male Athlete of the Year honour.

“It feels good to get athlete of the year,” first-time winner Howells said. “I feel like this has been three years in the making.

“It’s fantastic.”

Forever striving for perfection, Howells was humble in victory and is looking to the future as he hopes to compete in track and field for the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) next year.

“While I’m grateful, I hope this isn’t the pinnacle of my career,” he admitted. “I want to step up to the next level this coming year and see what happens.”
