Hear the roar of thunder!
The St. Timothy track and field team set the competition on fire at their Zone 2 qualifier for the Alberta Summer Games on May 14 and 15.
The Calgary Sprjng Challenge Track & Field Meet served as the qualifying event for multiple zones from across Alberta, and the Thunder excelled against the best the elite provincial club system had to offer.
Josh Novak (3000m) and Scott Delsing (1,500m) made the cut in the Youth Male category, while Eric Swedlo (800m), and Brenek Spademan (2,000m) qualified for the Midget Male age group.
Mikenna Spademan qualified in the 1,500m event in the Youth Female category, and Maggie Brolsma (1,200m, 2000m), and Elspeth Cooper (800m) made the cut for the Midget Female group.
Thunder runner Darci Petersen rocked it in the bantam age group, capturing bronze medals in the 800m and 1,200m events, while her training partner Grace Boston placed a close sixth (800m) and fifth (1,200m).
Liam McCollough rounded out the bantams, with a fifth-place finish in the 800m, and sixth in the 1,200m competition.
Track superstar Alex Howells broke the school record in the 800m event, racing a rocket-fast time of 1:58.22 – a race which followed his 8:52.62 provincial leading time in the 3,000m event during Calgary Senior High School Athletic Association (CSHSAA) action on May 13.
The Thunder are now training hard for the Summer Games which are being held in Leduc from July 14 to 17.
Before that, the school has multiple city championships to contest in both junior and senior high categories, as well as the Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association (ASAA) Provincial Championship in Edmonton on June 3 and 4.
