St. Timothy School Thunder are taking another run at the Calgary Senior High School Athletic Association (CSHSAA) varsity girl's City soccer title. The 2013 CSHSAA Div. 3 champs went 5-1 in regular-season play this fall before edging St. Gabriel 6-0 Oct. 13 in Calgary.
“Right from the get-go, we knew we had a strong team, ” said Thunder varsity girl's soccer coach Kevin MacLellan. “We had a lot of girls returning. And we had a lot of girls coming up from Grade 9 and Grade 10, which is fantastic. It's great for the program.
“We have some great leaders and strong players in our Grade 12s like Brittany and Amber and even Sam Delsing, who just started playing this year. She just picked it up on a whim.
“These girls are committed. ”
Count Sophia Nowicki as one of the committed Thunder varsity girl's soccer players. After taking a silver medal at CSHSAA cross-country running City championships in Cochrane, she joined her soccer team two hours later for a 6-0 CSHSAA win Oct. 7 over visiting Queen Elizabeth High School of Calgary.
“My dad has a lot of endurance. So I kind of get that from him, ” Nowicki said of her running four kilometres before running another 5-6 km on the soccer field the same day. “Endurance. I can't do much by the way of speed, but I can do a lot of endurance. ”
Her half-field sprint down the south sideline late in the match against QE indicated she had plenty of gas left in the tank.
“I really wanted to come out to the game, ” she surmised.
