The St. Timothy Thunder girls soccer team is looking to finish atop of the Calgary Senior High School Athletic Association (CSHSAA) division 2/3 standings, when they take on the Henry Wise Wood Warriors on Oct. 5.
The game is between two undefeated teams, as the Thunder are currently ranked first with a 5-0 record, while the Warriors are 4-0 with a tie attached to their record. Thunder head coach Kevin MacLellan says the Warriors will give his team their best test of the season.
“It’s a huge game obviously, because it will decide who gets first place, and a better seed in the playoffs,” MacLellan said.
“Wise Wood is right there, they have a solid program, they have an outstanding keeper so we’ll need to get some good shots on net. There won’t be anymore easy games and it’s basically down to lose and you’re done. The pressure is definitely on the girls to perform.”
The Thunder have outscored their opponents 23-3 so far this season, as they rely on a balanced attack.
“We play offence and defence as a whole team, we don’t just rely on one or two players to get the job done,” MacLellan said.
St. Timothy’s undefeated record may have come as a surprise to some, but the team has worked hard and stuck together to get to this point.
“To be honest, I didn’t really know what to expect from the team this year. We graduated eight players, including our goal keeper Gaby Pilling, who was in net for three years, but Kennedy Malloy has really stepped up in her place,” MacLellan said.
“The Grade 10s have been fantastic and the six new girls who are new to the team and the game of soccer have really been learning on the fly and having a lot of fun … the team has come together on their own.”
The game between the Thunder and Warriors will again be on Oct. 5 up at St. Timothy High School.
