Cochrane High School will post up another provincial banner after racking up 307 points to finish in first place at last weekend’s Alberta Schools Athletic Association track and field championship.

“I think we have a group of well-rounded athletes who can run, jump and throw,” said coach Esther Sieben. “The kids clawed their way to provincials … they fight for those centimetres.”

The Cobras’ 3A win makes it four in a row for the track team, which took 60 students to zones last month and another 32 to the ASAA provincial meet in Edmonton last Friday and Saturday.

There, four teens earned seven medals, including Kiki Alexander, who earned a bronze in triple jump, Matt Clooten TKTK, Brett Conlon with a bronze in shotput. Sieben’s own daughter Skylar medaled in four events: golds in shotput and high jump, silver in hurdles and bronze in long jump – the sport in which her mother currently still holds the senior high girls’ record.

“She’s kind of following in mom’s footsteps,” a proud Sieben said with a smile.

St. Timothy High School also earned some hardware at provincials, with graduating track competitor Sophia Nowicki bringing home a silver medal for her performance in the 3000-metre race.

In the junior high ranks, St. Tim’s had 39 athletes representing the school at the Tier 2 Calgary Catholic Junior High Schools City Championships on Tuesday.

The Thunder track team tied their own school record by collecting 24 medals, including nine golds.

St. Tim’s junior athletes will compete once more at Foothills Stadium from June 16 to 18.
