Cochrane Grizzlies player Rylen Waugh will show off his skills in British Columbia this weekend as part of Team Canada's final U18 men’s camp.
The Bow Valley Grizzlies defender hopes to represent his country in France later this year as a member of Team Canada.
Waugh is one of four Albertans who traveled yesterday to Shawinigan Lake for the final U18 mens’ camp, taking place until Sunday. He’ll try out along with 41 other teen prospects from around the country for a spot on the national rugby team. Waugh earned the opportunity to try out for Team Canada after attending a regional camp in the fall.
“I feel nervous," he said. “I think I rely heavily on my defense, my smarts in the game, my ability to read the play.”
After this weekend’s camp, Team Canada will trim the roster to 26 players. The squad will then travel to France in April for two weeks, where they will compete in the 2017 Rugby Europe U18 Open Championships.
