On April 12, Cochranite and Lethbridge Hurricanes captain Tyler Wong was announced as one of the nominees for the Western Hockey League’s (WHL) Doug Wickenheiser Memorial Trophy as the league’s Humanitarian of the Year.

Wong – who was the Eastern Conference’s Humanitarian of the Year award winner for the second straight year – recently finished his fourth season with the “Canes.

The player has become an integral part of the community and was also voted the Hurricanes’ Fan Favourite Player for the fourth consecutive year in March.

Prior to the start of the 2015/16 season, Wong created a program where he vowed to donate $5 of his own money to charity for every goal he scored.

Teammates Ryley Lindgren and Carter Folk as well as other individuals, and local businesses soon jumped on board to create the ‘Canes KidSport program which saw over $6,000 donated to KidSport this year.

In addition, the ‘Canes captain spends an hour each Monday with a Lethbridge atom hockey team as part of the Hurricanes’ Mentorship Program.

During his own time, the 19-year-old spends an hour and a half every Thursday he is available at Dr. Probe Elementary where he volunteers as a teacher’s assistant in a grade five classroom where he mentors students and helps them with math, reading, and science.
