Cochrane Cowboys wrestlers were again proven to be the cream of the crop as they brought all opposition to the floor during the ASAA High School Provincial Wrestling Championships at Bev Facey High School in Sherwood Park, on Mar. 11-12.
“We had around a dozen kids competing there,” said Cowboys coach Vern McNeice. “Overall, we did very well. We had athletes from our club representing five schools, and they didn’t disappoint. These kids put a lot of time in, some of them train 11 times a week, and dedicate their lives to this sport during the season. This just proves that hard work pays off.”
St. Timothy High School wrestlers won the overall Provincial title (their third in a row) in the 1A/2A boys category, while individually, there were plenty of medals to go around.
Cowboys wrestlers Connor McNeice (St. Tim’s) took gold in his respective category. As did Hunter Smith (Eckville). Ladies Sarah Gregory (William Eberhart), Brooklyn Thomson (Eckville), and Grace Chambers (Rocky Mountain House) also went home with gold medals. Charles Cook (St. Tim’s), and Carl Gildemeister (Bow Valley High School) nabbed silver medals. Vernon Pointen (Bow Valley) and Brett Burak (Eckville) received bronze. Jorgen Thompson and Bryce Crawford (both Cochrane High), Brendan Loeppky (St. Tim’s), and Alex Smith (Bow Valley) also competed but did not medal.
