TORONTO — Five things to watch for in the Canadian business world in the coming week:
Air Canada
Flights are halted at Air Canada as of Monday morning as the airline's flight attendants remain on the picket lines despite a federal return-to-work order. The company has said it will take several days for full operations to return once it begins resuming flights.
Inflation
Statistics Canada will release its latest reading on inflation for the month of July on Tuesday. The annual pace of inflation in June was 1.9 per cent, up from 1.7 per cent in May.
HBC
The court-appointed monitor overseeing the wind-up of the Bay is expected to release its latest report on the process on Wednesday. Several of Canada's most prominent real estate companies are opposing an attempt by B.C. billionaire Ruby Liu to take over 25 former Hudson's Bay leases, saying her plan for their spaces "defies commercial common sense."
Canada Post
A meeting between Canada Post and the union representing 55,000 postal workers is set for Wednesday. The contract talks come after postal workers rejected the latest contract offer by Canada Post in vote that was ordered by the federal government.
Retail sales
Statistics Canada will publish a snapshot of retail sales for June on Friday. The agency's advance estimate released last month pointed to an increase of 1.6 per cent for June, though it cautioned the figure would be revised. Retail sales in May fell 1.1 per cent to $69.2 billion.
