Husband, father, grandfather, brother, neighbour and friend Michael Edward Storey was released quite suddenly from his struggles with Terminal Dementia on May 3, 2025.
Born in Kingston, Ontario June 7, 1957, Mike moved east to Saint John, NB in the late 70’s and then west to Calgary, Alberta in 1986. In 2012, Mike and his wife, Margi, moved to their acreage north of Cochrane where Mike’s legacy of his incredible craftsmanship and results of his hard work will live forever. Many of Mike’s friends and family are comforted now by his creations and renovations in their homes – if you got a cedar garden planter, an amazing turkey dinner with his mouth-watering sausage stuffing, a batch of his spaghetti sauce or one of his signature quiches, you were one of his treasured friends. He fiercely loved his family and friends and was so sad that too many passed before him. He always worked hard, he rarely sat still, and he tried so hard to stay. Terminal Dementia is a cruel and sneaky disease that took our Michael far too early. Mike fought back hard and won his battle with esophageal cancer in 2011 and remained cancer free since then.
Mike is survived by wife of 35 years, Margi and their fur kids Trouper and Grace; his daughter Leanne Sherwood, her husband Brent and their sons, Garrett, Hudson and Jack; his stepdaughter Corinne Schneidmiller and her children, Savannah, Corbin and Abby; and his sister Patti (Barb). Michael’s parents, Ken and Rita passed before him as did his little brother Tony, Tony’s wife Carol and their children, James and Paula. He was also predeceased by Margi’s mum, Myrna Shapter who always loved him as a son. We suspect she is showing him around in Heaven now and they are back to plotting their shenanigans.
The family is surrounded now by incredible friends who are helping us navigate this strange new normal without Mike – their support is beyond believable and “thank you” doesn’t even come close to the appreciation we feel. Too many to mention but you know who you are. We know our friends are gutted with this shocking loss as well – Mike is definitely being mourned by more than just his family.
The family will be honouring Mike’s request for no funeral or memorial service, but there will likely be a private celebration of his life at a later date.
Fly with the angels now, Mike – thank you for sharing your far too short life with us. We hope you are boating on calm clear waters, enjoying eternally warm days and finally catching instead of fishing. We also hope Heaven has garages full of fast classic cars at your disposal. You did such a good job here and you will be missed and loved forever.
