May 2, 1937 - August 21, 2025

Lavina “Jan” Tranter (nee Carter), of Cochrane, AB, passed away on Thursday, August 21, 2025, at the age of 88 years with her loved ones by her side.

Jan was born in Toronto, ON, on May 2, 1937, to Lloyd and Winifred Carter, where she spent her childhood years. During her years in grade school, she met Kenneth Tranter. They fell in love with each other, attending many dances and riding their bikes where Jan would often try to knock Ken off. Ken and Jan were married about five years later, on June 2, 1956, in Scarborough, ON. Ken and Jan then spent the next 69 years creating a loving family, travelling the world and building a successful dog business. Ken and Jan lived in Scarborough and Markham and had a cabin along the Burnt River in Ontario. They later in life relocated to Cochrane, AB upon the birth of their great-granddaughter in 2016.

She was a member of the Cub Scouts of Canada in Ontario during her young adult years and volunteered at Markham-Stouffville Hospital.

Jan was an accomplished owner/operator of Nobledee Kennels, which she and Ken began on their property in Stouffville, ON. The kennel offered boarding, grooming, and they also bred beautiful Irish Setters. Jan had a love and passion for dogs, cats, and horses, which continued throughout her golden years, where she was able to continue grooming dogs and pet sitting once settled in Cochrane, AB.

She loved to travel with Ken all over the world, circling the globe twice over the years. Some of her favourite travel destinations were Greece and the Canary Islands. One of her favourite experiences was the “Soft Nights” in Greece.  Ken and Jan also completed 33 cruises, eighteen of which were aboard Princess Cruises.

She will be most remembered for her strong, independent personality, on top of her love for dogs.

Jan is survived by her devoted, loving husband Kenneth Tranter of Cochrane, AB; her children, Mark (Catherine) Tranter of Ontario and  Cindy (Bob) Kam of Benchlands, AB; her grandchildren: Jason of Ontario; Brandon of Calgary, AB, Kira (Trevor) of Airdrie, AB, Lauren (Jonathan) of Ontario, and Conner (Brittany) of Calgary, AB; as well as her great-grandchildren, Skyelar, Millicent, Beau, and Benjamin.
