Cochrane High School gets into Christmas season

Everyone wants to be a good person. To that end, people donate, start charity events, and they do the little things like simply opening a door for someone. Cochrane takes part in many of these types of events, even in the high schools.

Everyone wants to be a good person.

To that end, people donate, start charity events, and they do the little things like simply opening a door for someone.

Cochrane takes part in many of these types of events, even in the high schools. I’m Jen Robichaud, I go to Cochrane High (CHS) and I will be writing a regular column for the Eagle. There is always something going on at my school whether it’s a charity event, a sports event, or a drama production.

For my first column, I wanted to write about the Helping Hampers event the school recently organized and why it’s important for people to get involved with events that help those in need or strengthen the community.

Helping Hampers, which wrapped up on Dec. 9, is an opportunity for our school community to help those in need around the holiday season.

For many people, Christmas is the “happiest time of year” and brings them joy. For others, it is a reminder of what they have and what others don’t. Christmas should be a time of giving whether that’s to your Grandma or someone in need, which is what makes Helping Hampers such a wonderful event – it help families in need.

Organized by the school’s leadership group, families send the school their clothing sizes and a list of other things they need. Each classroom in the school then receives a sheet with the things students can donate. Every class participates and tries to see who can bring all their items in first. At the end, there was a huge amount of food, toiletries, cleaning items, gifts, and more.

The leadership group at Cochrane High is also working with the “Cochrane Activettes” to participate in the “Share your Christmas” campaign, which collects, food, clothing and gifts for 100 families in need.

Getting High Schools and teens involved in events like these is so important because it teaches them to get into the spirit of giving at a young age, which can extend into a lifelong attitude. Some might even find a career that focuses on helping – if that’s their interest.

After organizing a huge event like this, our school community should feel accomplished and look to what they can do next! If we can help even a few families have a better Christmas, that is a good feeling.

Coming together like this can make someone’s day just a little brighter.
