Coffee with Warren: To the fruit man

Summer’s almost upon us, and it looks like many of us in Cochrane are going to be sad over not finding Glen Koenig’s fresh BC fruit and vegetable truck in the former Rexall Pharmacy parking lot along First Street West on Fridays.

The Salmon Arm-area grower had been marketing his BC produce in our community for 35 years. It wouldn’t be summer for Mary Anna and me without enjoying Glen’s strawberries, raspberries and blueberries with our morning cereal and his cherries in her tasty pies.

But wildfire and health concerns put a halt to Glen’s visits. When I contacted him the other day, he indicated he won’t be selling fruit in Alberta, but just at his orchard now. He emailed me a message to pass on to his Cochrane fans:

“I would like to say thank you to all my loyal customers. I have many fond memories of watching young kids grow up to be adults and they remembering picking out a pumpkin or eating a piece of fruit I had given them. Many of my customers are my friends today. I couldn't have done it without you.” – signed “Glen, the Fruit Man.”

Well, Glen, thank YOU! You’ve left a good taste in our mouths and hearts. We will miss you.
