The Stoney Nakoda Nation paid tribute to Chiniki councillor Clifford Powderface who passed away July 3, 2017 after a battle with cancer. A band councillor for nine years, Powderface served his community with humility and compassion. In leadership, he represented traditional values with a quiet dignity that earned him the respect of his colleagues. Chief Aaron Young and Coun. Jordie Mark of the Chiniki Band both spoke of his wisdom, and the guidance he provided at the funeral service held July 8, 2017.

The son of the late Chief Frank Powderface and the late Caroline Powderface (Wesley), he was also the second half of the Powderface twins. His twin brother, Charles, spoke of how as mischievous boys they would fool people including one incident where Charles took his brother’s place in a foot race after Clifford lost. Charles was the faster of the two.

Coun. Powderface was respected in the powwow circle as well. Co-founder of the Chiniki Lake Singers, he was both composer and lead singer. In 1983, the renowned drum group won the international championship in South Dakota. A former Chicken Dancer, AA hockey player, and a contender in rodeo, he was most respected for his role as a pipe holder and spiritual leader. Many have sought his wisdom, and guidance and through this his memory will live on.

This was evidenced in what was a poignant tribute. As a beautiful honor song filled the gymnasium with powerful voices, community members stood as his sons, Conlin, Johnny, and Dallas led his casket in. His wife of 40 years, Verna, looked regal in her ribbon dress. It was truly a beautiful sight. A respected Elder, statesman and spiritual leader, Coun. Powderface will be fondly remembered by his four daughters, three sons, and their families. The Stoney Nakoda and greater powwow community will also remember him.
