Since Education Minister Eggen’s “Guidelines for Best Practices" (more appropriately transgender guidelines), were unanimously approved by the Rocky View School Board’s trustees, it is apparent that that the trustees have swallowed hook, line, and sinker Education Minister David Eggen’s ideologically-based opinions as to how to provide a caring and safe learning environment. (To see what the board endorses, click on the board/policies tab at the Rocky View Schools web site, and under administrative procedures, choose AP207.)
What can parents do who don’t agree with the board? Apart from launching a petition calling for a public meeting according to Section 269 of the Alberta School Act, the next time that elections for school trustees come up, make sure that you are intentional in voting for a trustee who adequately represents your interests, particularly the right of parents (not the state) to control and direct the upbringing of their child. While voter turnout tends to be low for such elections, in many ways such voting may be more important for parents and our future than voting in provincial elections.
As recognized by the late U.S. president Abraham Lincoln, “The philosophy of the classroom in one generation will be the philosophy of the government in the next.”
