When I talk to people about the reason they moved to Cochrane one of the most common comments I get is because of that “small town feel.”
Lately though you have to wonder if we are losing that quaint, sentimental feel that is associated with small communities. Our population has grown almost 30 per cent in the last three years and we are getting a variety of new people in town. Council has been adamant about keeping up with growth and not falling behind. That is why we have allocated $110 million for roads and infrastructure over the next 10 years.
In addition, we wisely elected to put the Aquatic and Curling/Multi-Sport Centre addition on to the Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre as opposed to putting millions into maintaining old, undersized existing infrastructure.
So how do we try and preserve some of what made Cochrane attractive to many residents in the first place? On the Council end of things, Coun. Gaynor Levisky and I are coming to the final stages of our Community Enhancements notice of motion. This has been in the works for more than two years and with its final approval should be one very important step in helping Cochrane maintain some of its charm. But as a community at risk of losing its cozy, laid back roots, I believe we can do more.
Let’s shop locally as much as we can, supporting our hard working business owners. When we go for a walk on our beautiful pathways don’t be shy about greeting your fellow citizens. You will find most people are very friendly and will even say “hi” back. Get to know your immediate neighbours; don’t sequester yourself to the four walls of your home. Get active in the community and volunteer. Come out to public open houses and give your valuable feedback. Council needs to know what matters to you and we want your input.
If you have any questions about how to get more involved please don’t hesitate to contact the town and we can provide you with information. You can also find information about council activities on my blog at www.jefftoews.ca .
Have a safe and enjoyable summer.
