Alberta students vote UCP in mock election

The United Conservative Party may have an early declaration from the province's elementary to high school students.

According to Student Vote, the youth mock election generally mirrors the provincial results and this year more than 165,000 Alberta students handed the UCP a majority victory of 49 per cent.

"As of 4 p.m. this afternoon, 1,229 schools had reported their election results, representing all 87 electoral divisions in the province. In total, 165,527 ballots were cast by student participants; 159,197 valid ballots, 4,417 rejected ballots and 1,913 declined ballot," stated the Student Vote results.

In Airdire-Cochrane, students chose Peter Guthrie of the UCP with 1,115 votes and 40.73 per cent of the vote. The NDP's Steve Durrell took 781 votes and 27.64 per cent of the total. Vern Raincock of the Alberta Party tallied 467 votes or 16.53 per cent. Matthew Morrisey of the Freedom Conservative Party brought in
225 or 7.96 per cent. Danielle Cameron of the Alberta Independence Party earned 202 votes and 7.15 per cent.


Students elected Jason Kenney and the UCP with 49 out of 87 seats and 36.1 per cent of the vote. Kenney also won in his electoral division of Calgary-Lougheed with 54.4 per cent of the vote.



Rachel Notley and the Alberta New Democratic Party took 35 seats to form the official opposition, receiving 30.3 per cent of the popular vote. Notley won in her electoral division of Edmonton-Strathcona with 52.1 per cent of the vote.


Stephen Mandel and the Alberta Party won three seats and received 18.5 per cent of the vote.


Mandel was defeated in his electoral division of Edmonton-McClung.


Despite receiving 5.3 per cent of the vote, the Alberta Liberal Party did not win any seats. Leader David

Khan was defeated in his electoral division of Calgary-Mountain View.
