“We were looking for an opportunity that allows more visitors to experience our spirits and whiskies,” shares founder Brett Schönekess. “Our Old West Mall bottle shop provides convenient access for visitors who are exploring the hamlet or exploring the local shops.”
Distilleries face plenty of rules and regulations. Only those willing to do the work and invest time and patience for the sake of brand – and their customers – excel. For this, Schönekess keeps things positive.
“Opening a location takes a lot of time and can only be done in certain areas,” he explains. “It’s a long and detailed process. However, for every step that is challenging, there are solutions and opportunities.”
Since it opened its first location and introduced Hut Spirits, Bragg Creek Distillers has grown in popularity. “HUT Canadian Maple Whisky, any one of our single malts, and our black currant gin are very popular. New favourites this year are our PROPER Caesars in a can, a new gin, and two vodkas – spicy and dirty,” Schönekess says.
For the growing business, local support has made all the difference.
“This is an industry with a lot of super hardworking and creative distillers and brewers with a passion for creating great products,” says Schönekess. “Alberta has a good, open regulatory system around spirits and beer, however, because we have such an open system we also have many, many products from out of province and this can be a challenge to overcome in the retail liquor store market. Honestly, I think every brewery and distillery has some unique products and strengths. There will always be something that people will enjoy at every shop. The community of Bragg Creek has been very positive about the growing popularity of craft beverages.”

"With the deer walking by and the relative quiet of not being in the centre of the hamlet, the relaxation comes naturally,” smiles Schönekess of the 27 Burnside Drive Hut location.
