CALGARY — Advocates in the fight against human trafficking say the financial hardship and isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic have helped perpetrators find new targets.

Five elk that fell though the ice in the past few days have been plucked to safety by Banff wildlife conservation officers; however, one had to be euthanized despite staff working through the night to try to save her.

“I think 122 is a very likely candidate to be one of the first bears,” said Dan Rafla, a human-wildlife coexistence specialist with Banff National Park.

“We know it won’t be a silver bullet, but I do believe it will be important in protecting jobs, keeping businesses open and making sure tourism not only drives our economy, but grows.”
