EDMONTON — Alberta Premier Jason Kenney says tougher health restrictions likely to be aimed at Calgary and Edmonton are coming if current public-health orders don’t bend the curve down on COVID-19.

The province is continuing to make plans for field hospitals, in an attempt to be prepared for all possible scenarios.

Since the fall, the spread of COVID-19 has increased everywhere, but daily case numbers on the Prairies have been matching areas with about double the population. 

There were 511 Albertans in hospital, 97 of them in intensive care. A total of 575 Albertans have died.

COVID-19 doesn’t care where you live or what your postal code is, Hinshaw said, and she reminded residents it just takes one case in a community to cause an outbreak.

Alberta’s app has tracked down just a handful of cases in six months.

Findings hoped to lead to new biomarker to identify patients at higher risk.

“By the summer, we plan to begin phase three, where (the) vaccine will offered to all Albertans. That means it will be months before vaccines will be available to the general population,” Kenney said.

U of A research also shows which symptoms are more likely to indicate infection.
