Wondering about days gone by?

A journey back in time to the pre-fur-trade cultures of the Bow Valley area will be the theme of a Cochrane Ideas presentation Jan. 8 at King Solomon’s Lodge, 120 Centre Avenue in Cochrane. The presentation begins at 7 p.m.

Featured speaker will be Dr. Dale Walde, associate professor of archeology at the University of Calgary and a resident of Cochrane.

A specialist in the study of Canadian Plains archeology before the arrival of Europeans, and involved in archeological studies since 1979, Walde will outline the changes in lifestyles, technology, and cultural contacts that occurred during the 11,000 years of pre-contact human existence in southern Alberta before the fur trade. Walde will also make suggestions as to the distribution of various ethnic groups immediately prior to European contact in the area.

He joined the U of C department of archaeology in 1998 and is currently directing excavations at the Cluny Fortified Village site on the Siksika Nation, east of Calgary. He also operates a public archaeology program and indigenous youth involvement program at the site.

All interested people are invited to attend at no charge, although small donations are welcome. Cochrane Ideas has been operating for 16 years, offering a wide range of discussion on many topics at its monthly meetings.
