Accessory suites (rental properties in residential homes) have been a contentious issue in the past has they can impact parking and neighbourhood density, but also be good source of income for homeowners.
In an effort to understand more about what the public wants from the town in terms of regulations surrounding accessory suites, it has launched a new public survey on its consultation website - letstalkcochrane.ca. The results will help inform updates to the accessory suite bylaws the town is working on.
There are two types of suites allowed in the Town of Cochrane:
- Accessory suite: a self-contained dwelling in the basement of the main residence with its own cooking, living, sleep and sanitary facilities.
- Garden suite: a self-contained dwelling unit in the rear yard of a residential lot that also has a house. These are located in a separate building and are either one-storey in height or above a detached garage.
The draft bylaw will go to council between April and June.
