A brother and sister duo have hit the streets in Cochrane selling decals to raise money for Red Cross for the wildfire evacuees.
Teeghan Cherrington 12, and her brother, Logan, 10, partnered with their neighbour Hayley Harris - who made the decals - offering black, white, pink and red “Alberta Strong ” decals asking for a minimum donation of $5.
“I feel sad, a lot of people lost their homes … it feels good to be helping, ” Logan said.
Originally from Fort McMurray, the family moved to Cochrane only last July but still have family and friends who were evacuated due to the wildfires.
“It's hard and surprising it happened so fast, ” Teeghan said.
Since sales started last week, more than $400 has been raised with orders coming in from all across Canada and even the United States, according to the Cherrington family.
The family said they are grateful for all the support, especially from the community. The brother and sister also said they like the reactions they have been getting from people when a 12-year-old and 10-year-old show up on their doorstep trying to raise funds for Red Cross.
“One man said this is what the next generation of kids should look like, ” Teeghan said.
The family said they will stop selling the decals when people stop asking but for now will continue to visit Cochrane neighbourhoods, including Heartland last weekend and Fireside this upcoming weekend. Teeghan and Logan are also looking into getting booths at community garage sales.
Other decals sales throughout town have also been popping up, including “Alberta Strong ” decals sold by Theresa Krekoski and Stephanie Tomlinson, in partnership with family friends from Rocky Mountain House.
“This last year me and family has been through a lot of devastation and I can sympathize with them, ” Krekoski said.
“It is hard to know what is around the corner and I can't help with monetary donations but I can help with this. ”
The other Alberta Strong decals are $10 donation and raised more than $2,000 with future orders to be announced on each organizer's social media page. The funds are going towards Alberta SPCA and directly to the families affected with the help of the family friend in Rocky Mountain House.
And to place an order from Teeghan and Logan, message Hayley Harris or Patricia Phillips on Facebook.
