Benjamin Laslo was released on bail following an appearance in Cochrane Provincial Court via CCTV Sept. 30.
The 26-year-old Cochrane man has been held in custody at the Calgary Remand Centre since his arrest Aug. 17 following an incident that took place in the community of West Valley, where the man was reported to be walking around the community with a firearm and a crossbow.
When Laslo allegedly refused to put down his weapons as per request of the Cochrane RCMP, the situation escalated, where some 25-30 Cochrane RCMP, the RCMP Emergency Response Team South and the HAWCS helicopter were deployed to assist the situation.
Laslo was reported to have found his way back to his residence at 92 Quigley Drive, where officers surrounded his home and he eventually surrendered around 9:45 p.m. (around 5 hours from the initial report to local RCMP).
He has been charged with two counts of ‘carrying a weapon for a purpose dangerous to the public peace’, contrary to section 88 (1) of the Criminal Code.
He was released on $1,000 cash or $5,000 assurity and is to reside (with his father) at 92 Quigley Drive; he is not permitted to move to another residence without consent of the court.
The conditions of his release include keeping the peace; reporting to Cochrane RCMP in person on alternating weeks and via phone on weeks in between; to stay away from Mitford Park and Smitty’s Restaurant; to abide by a curfew from 8 p.m.- 6 a.m. (bearing emergencies); to abide by a weapons prohibition (including knives); and to refrain from alcohol or ‘intoxicating substances’.
Laslo is scheduled to reappear in Cochrane Provincial Court Nov. 4.
