Direct Energy has teamed up with the Alberta Weekly Newspapers Association (AWNA) again this year for the Volunteer Citizen of the Year Award (VCOY), which gives recognition to dedicated individuals whose time and contributions enhance community living.
The annual award is entering its 11th year since its introduction in 2005 in Alberta, which can be won by any individual who is nominated from a community in an AWNA area. The Cochrane Eagle is a member of the AWNA.
“Each year there are hundreds of nominations for this award because Alberta is home to a vibrant sense of volunteer spirit, which is worthy of spotlighting and rewarding,” said Tanis Kozak, vice president and general manager of Direct Energy, in a recent press release.
Anyone can self-nominate or nominate a key member of their community who shows great volunteer spirit by writing an essay under 750 words about why that individual should be nominated and what they have done within their community.
Four semi-finalists in addition to the winner will gain recognition through a commemorative award, as well as an article and photo printed in an AWNA newspaper from their respective community.
The winner will additionally receive a $5,000 grant for an organization or cause of their choice within their community and have their article and photo printed in AWNA newspapers across Alberta.
Last year, about 50 nominations we received, according to Direct Energy’s press release. While winners have included individuals from towns all over Alberta, in 2006, Chelsey Dawes from Airdrie won the award when she was 18 years old.
“We’re looking forward to once again recognizing individuals who work hard to make our communities great places to live,” said Fred Gorman, AWNA president. “This program is designed to showcase appreciation for their efforts.”
