Be SMART with your New Year's fitness goals, say Cochrane trainers

“As trainers, we always try to stick to the ‘SMART’ principles,” SLSFSC fitness supervisor, Joelle Brown, said said. “So specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely. I know it’s old-school, but it works, rather than say, ‘I’m going to work out everyday, be sore, and over do it,’ is to set realistic goals.”

Staff from Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre shares tips on how to ensure your new year leads to a new you as people get in shape for 2023.

Gym-goers and fitness centre users in Cochrane can expect an influx of locals adopting the mantra, “new year, new me,” as the calendar flips over to 2023.

But before anyone takes their pre-workout to prepare for their first pump of the new year, employees of Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre (SLSFSC) are sharing their tips for those hoping to get into shape as their new year's resolution.

In order to help fitness first-timers commit to their new year’s resolution, Joelle Brown, a fitness supervisor with SLSFSC, said the best thing to do is play it ‘SMART.’

“As trainers, we always try to stick to the ‘SMART’ principles,” Brown said. “So specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely.

“I know it’s old-school, but it works, rather than say, ‘I’m going to work out everyday, be sore, and over do it,’ is to set realistic goals.”

Brown said that in order to avoid injury, it is a good idea to take lessons or get advice on how to properly exercise and always pick a physical activity that you enjoy.

“If you hate swimming and the trainer said you have to swim every day, you’re not going to do it,” Brown said.

Outside of the gym, Brown said that finding positive influences to keep you motivated can play a key factor in your fitness journey in 2023.

“Finding your support group is really important,” Brown said. “Your friends, family and also identifying your road blockers too that aren’t going to support you. You know, making sure they are a good friend, a good buddy, and not somebody that misses their workout.”

Fitness programs coordinator Stephanie Marello agreed with Brown, and added that keeping things small and spontaneous can create noticeable, significant improvements.

“Just add slight changes, so small little things each day,” Marello said. “You won’t feel like you’re doing it a whole lot, but in a couple months it’s amazing and in a year, people will be saying – ‘wow! What have you been doing?’ But you can honestly say nothing because you haven’t made massive changes.”

Marello said working out with a partner is also a good decision, and SLSFSC can help welcome people to the fitness community in Cochrane.

“Come here and try one of our classes because you will definitely meet your community of like-minded folks,” Marello said.

For those who might waver or fail to commit to their routine as the weeks and months go by, Marello said it is important to set yourself a goal by finding a cause or activity you may be interested in – such as a race, competition, or other event to work towards.

“For myself even, I always enter myself into a race every year and so I’m always obligated to train so I can fulfil my investment,” Marello said. “If you have something you’re passionate for, maybe a charity, then you can look it up and see if they have any events and decide to do that.

“We have indoor triathlons, fitness classes, we have our Commit to Fit in January – there’s something for everyone.”

Sales and marketing manager Michelle Everette said another aspect to remember when it comes to your 2023 fitness is the time commitment it takes to get in shape, and to remain patient with the process.

“They have to give themselves time and not give up after a week or if they give themselves a break to get back in it,” Everett said. “You can start those resolutions anytime, not just on the first day of January and give up,”

Outside of picking up comfortable workout clothes, Marello said the best advice is to find something that interests you.

“If you love dance, come to a Zumba class, if you love riding a bike, try a spin class, if you love to stretch, try yoga,” Marello said. “Honestly don’t worry about what is in style or trending. Do what makes you happy.”

Brown, Marello, and Everett invite anyone who is interested in learning more about the amenities at SLSFSC, fitness classes, and upcoming workshops, including two free body-building workshops taking place in the first week of January, to visit slsfamilysportscentre.com.
