Big Hill Haven will have enough to continue employing its outreach worker thanks to a large donation made by the family of Bob Campbell. The organization has been working towards creating Cochrane's first women's shelter and Campbell was at the helm as the first board member. However, on the evening of Big Hill Haven's most recent fundraiser in April, Campbell was killed in a two-car collision. Over the last few months, his family has been fundraising and last week, they donated nearly $12,000 to Big Hill Haven. "The support is incredible and the fact that they thought of doing this in the middle of everything that was going on in their lives," Margaret Van Tighem said. The funds will go toward the current outreach worker's two-and-half-day work week in the community and also has a desk at the FCSS office. Big Hill Haven has raised more than 60,000 from last two fundraisers earlier this year. "That's pretty incredible for a town the size of Cochrane," Van Tighem said. "We have enough money to maintain Patti (Fisher) as an outreach worker." Big Hill Haven will start its capital drive at the start of September with the goal of raising at least one million so the organization is eligible to apply for grants. Building the Big Hill Haven shelter is projected to be around $3 million.
