A brown-coloured black bear was successfully darted and immobilized Aug. 19 by Cochrane Fish and Wildlife officer, Jason Cadzow, with the help of local RCMP.
Following reports of a black bear between hole 15 and hole 16 at The Links of GlenEagles golf course, Cadzow returned twice to the golf course to address the complaint.
After successfully hazing the bear from the area around 6:30 p.m., Cadzow was called back to the area around 7:45 p.m. that evening, with reports that the bear had returned to the golf course around the same area.
Cadzow, with the help of the RCMP located the bear running toward hole 9. The bear then climbed over the chain link fence, ending up in the backyard of a residence on GlenEagles Close.
The bear, which Cadzow said had ‘beautiful colours’ is estimated to be between 1-2 years of age, weighing around 130 pounds. He was relocated Aug. 19, north of Cochrane.
“This time of year, bears tend to be a bit more mobile, seeking out those berry-producing natural crops,” said the Fish and Wildlife officer of 14 years.
Slade King, golf pro at The Links of GlenEagles, said it was ‘an exciting night’, adding that “the bear showed no aggression at all, but had no fear of people”.
