Bottle depot proceeds still sought for Holy Spirit playground

The students at Holy Spirit Catholic Elementary are that much closer to getting their new community playground.

The students at Holy Spirit Catholic Elementary are that much closer to getting their new community playground.

As the school has broken their $60,000 fundraising goal, they have been busy applying for grant monies to top up their needed $125,000 to build the new, wheelchair-accessible playground that would be built from 100 per cent recycled materials.

The Holy Spirit Playground Committee recently received a $30,000 grant through Alberta Recyclers to go toward the recycled tire rubberized surface (base of the playground).

The goal is to have all the monies secured by the fall of 2015 and to have the playground operational by the spring of 2016.

“The revitalization of the playground is a much needed endeavour,” said school principal, Kevin DeForge.

“It would provide a new space where students could be active and engage in play, which are two vital factors for children. The parents on the playground committee have been such a dedicated and caring group of individuals, who have made a great deal of progress in such a short time. They have truly held to the request of an environmentally-friendly and wheelchair accessible playground by the children.”

Green Roots Play Equipment Inc. is the playground contractor.

To learn more, contact the school at 403-500-2065; the committee is still asking for bottle depot proceeds from families who wish to help out to go toward the grassroots project.
