The Cochrane & Area Humane Society staff is upset after a recent theft from the shelter.

Hundreds of bottles were stolen between Sunday night and early Monday morning, when the suspect(s) broke into the shed located on the property. The bottles stolen were part of the Container for Critters program, where the shelter collects recyclable containers to raise funds to help Cochrane's furry friends.

“They cut the lock and then emptied out half of the shed - we lost hundreds of dollars worth of bottles, ” explained Jaimie Anton, the shelter's fund development officer.

“It is incredibly frustrating as the Containers for Critters program really helps out the animals, particularly in these tough times. ”

The theft happened right in the middle of the shelter's fundraising campaign for the new Rehabilitation and Education Centre. The 4,000-square-foot-building behind the current shelter has the walls and framing up and is “on-track ” with more than 83 per cent of the $850,000 goal already raised.

The shelter is also “busy ” and “full ” after partnering with another animal shelter in Lloydminster and housing some of the rescues from North.

“They don't have the physical space to hold the animals and that is a big part of why we are doing that - we want to support animals in rural communities and they don't have the resources there, ” Anton explained.

The Containers for Critters has two drop off locations, one at the shelter in Cochrane located at 62 Griffin Industrial Point, and one in Rocky View County, located southwest of Airdrie at 10135 Township Road 264 at the Place 4 Paws.
