The Boys and Girls Club of Cochrane and Area (BGC) will be partnering with Bragg Creek in the New Year.

The BGC will be expanding its in-school programs to Bragg Creek schools after an assessment of student-interest is determined.

“We will be working with schools out there and have an assessment with the students and child’s development counsellor and then we are going to be partnering with the community centre staff,” said Jeff Gray, manager of BGC youth programs in Cochrane.

“We are going to see what works and what people have expressed interest in.”

Currently the BGC runs several programs in Cochrane including Game Tech. With funding from Microsoft, the program introduces youth to computer programming. There is also Rogers Raising the Grade, a program to help youth discover interests, shape career goals and plan for the future, to name a few.

The in-school program expansion will be in partnership with Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) and Rocky View County (RVC).

“This is an effort to ease some of the pressures that the families have out there. They are still recovering from the flood a couple years ago – this will be something to lessen the stress that kids are feeling,” Gray explained.

BGC and the Bragg Creek school staff and students will begin the needs assessment in January, moving forward with in-school programs after it is determined which programs will best suit the needs for the students.

The BGC is a registered charitable organization that has been in Cochrane and area community for more than 20 years.

The organization’s goal is to provide a safe, supportive place for children and youth to experience new opportunities, overcome barriers, build positive relationships and develop confidence and skills for life.

The BGC runs several local in-school and out-of-school programs. For more information on Boys and Girls Club of Cochrane and Area programs, go to bgccochrane.ca
