Bragg Creek community centre starts to rebuild

A contractor has hired SynCon Management Ltd to begin reconstruction of the Bragg Creek Community Centre.

A contractor has hired SynCon Management Ltd to begin reconstruction of the Bragg Creek Community Centre.

“We are excited to have a contractor from Bragg Creek, they will hire people who live in the area and create jobs within the community, which is nice,” said Mike Medwid, with the Bragg Creek Community Association (BCCA).

The Community Centre has been closed since January, after one of the fire-suppression pipes burst in the ceiling, leaking a combination of water and fire suppressant. The flood damaged the stage, auditorium area and meeting rooms.

The centre was used as a community cultural hub, hosting a variety of programs for different user groups. Since the damage, the community centre programs have been held at alternative Bragg Creek venues.

“We have talked with the different user groups to figure out how to improve what was there and I think this will be good, we tried to make it better,” Medwid said.

SynCon Management Ltd. has begun renovations. While the fire-suppression system is close to being fully repaired, the stage, auditorium area and meeting rooms still need to have the walling and floors replaced, along with half of the ceiling, according to Medwid.

The association is hopeful the community centre will be ready to re-open by late August/early September.

Along with the interior repairs to the community centre, organizers are also planning to revamp the outside with new playground equipment to be installed for mid-June.

The association is asking for any volunteers who want to help with the playground installation to contact Luanne with the Bragg Creek Community Centre at [email protected] and 403-949-4277 ext. 1, or go to the association’s official Facebook page, “Bragg Creek Community Association.”
