Bragg Creek fundraiser to mark flood anniversary

In honour of the one-year anniversary of the epic June 20, 2013 flood, the PowderHorn Saloon will be hosting a fundraiser this June 20, beginning at 2:30 p.m.

“It’s to raise money for the Bragg Creek Chamber of Commerce and local charities who have been involved with local flood recovery efforts,” explained PowderHorn manager, Rose Dallyn.

All of the hamlet businesses were affected by last year’s catastrophic event — whether through direct flood damages or the aftermath of a significant loss in business traffic.

The local chamber and other groups have been faced with significant advertising costs, as well as flood reparations, in order to start bringing business back into the hamlet.

“We need to keep telling people that we’re open — a lot of people still think Bragg Creek businesses are closed.”

The parking lot in front of the saloon will feature a variety of local entertainment, a barbecue and beer gardens; the PowderHorn is providing all products at cost and all proceeds from sales will go to the Chamber and other non-profits in the community.

The outdoor event runs from 2:30-9 p.m. with an after-party to follow indoors.

The PowderHorn itself was “completely destroyed” and was closed for a full month following the flood disaster.

Anyone with silent auction items to donate is encouraged to contact the PowderHorn at 403-949-3946.

Bragg Creekers who care have united to form a grassroots group — ‘Recreate the Creek’ — with their intentions set on beautifying the hamlet they call home.

As flood reparations continue, the group has decided to postpone their ‘Bragg Creek Clean-Up Day’ from June 28 until Sept. 13.

Kidco Construction, the Calgary-based company contracted to work on all road allowances in the hamlet as part of the flood recovery, is slated for completion by mid-August.

The group decided that to wait until road allowances are complete before taking the initiative to clean up the Creek and begin community street planting.

“The community is really optimistic about rebuilding and moving forward,” said Shannon Bailey from the group, a Bragg Creek resident who was impacted by the flood.

Bailey said that a few community members decided to get together to think about ways to bring the beauty of the community back to life.

The group has been meeting regularly and is seeking community input in the coming months about how to beautify the hamlet streets, beginning this fall.

She said that anyone interested in rolling up his or her sleeves is welcomed to contact her at 403-949-4147.
