The Bragg Creek and Greater Area Historical Society is presenting writer, singer and poet Sid Marty on April 2.
“Sid Marty is fabulous – he weaves in anecdotal stories and he is really engaging,” explained Michele McDonald of the Bragg Creek and Greater Area Historical Society.
The fourth-generation Albertan has written and published five non-fiction books and three books of poetry. Also a singer-songwriter, Marty bases his stories from his experience as a park warden in Rocky Mountain national parks.
“We’ve had other authors present in the past and it has gone over really well,” McDonald said.
The society, still in its infancy, has been working on building a membership while hosting various events and meetings with funding from a grant from Rocky View County. The last speaker the society presented gathered a crowd of approximately 60.
“Bragg Creek is really worth celebrating and some of the things we have are worth preserving,” McDonald said.
“The Society is in our infancy right now and going to look at establishing a membership fee but so far we are just hosting meetings and events and trying to get people interested.”
The events are open to all of the public and free of charge. In addition to the events, the society is also gathering historical information and items to better tell the history of the hamlet, specifically seeking historical photos.
“We’ve stepped up to collect historical items for all of the community and we want to preserve it and build a robust online archive,” McDonald said.
“We just really want to get more people interested in the history of Bragg Creek and area.”
The Society will be presenting Albertan author Sid Marty at the Snowbirds Chalet in Bragg Creek on April 2 at 11:30 a.m. The event is open to all ages and free of charge.
