The Town of Cochrane is proposing several revisions to its animal bylaw to promote responsible pet ownership.

The idea for revision came after local peace officers suggested a need for enhancement of the bylaw.

Town staff then surveyed the community and discussed the possible changes with members of council and administration, while also consulting legal advice, according to a press release from the Town of Cochrane.

Suggested revisions include more detailed definitions of attack, bite and severe injury, clarified language for noise and threatening behaviours; additions and clarification to regulations for use of off-leash areas; clarification of timing for licensing; and a new schedule to include the Dr. Ian Dunbar aggression scale.

The town will be hosting a round-table session Oct. 21, welcoming members of the public to attend to discuss the proposed changes.

“We want to talk about the revisions and the ways they improve the bylaw,” municipal enforcement Sgt. Charlene Ruttle said.

“Round-table discussions give people a chance to understand the proposed changes to the bylaw and how their feedback can help us finalize the draft that will go to council.”

The discussion will take place at the Cochrane Protective Services Centre from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. located at 20 Grande Boulevard.

The comments and discussion will be on the Town of Cochrane website from Oct. 22 to Nov. 5 providing opportunity for the public to offer further input and feedback.
