Cochrane cadets want your cans and bottles to help them realize their once-in-a-life-time trip to the anniversary of one of Canada’s greatest battles.

The 2512 King’s Own Calgary Regiment Royal Canadian Army Cadets will be door knocking around town (homes south of the train tracks) this Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. to collect beverage containers from charitable Cochranites.

The money raised will help fund their April 2017 trip to the official 100th year commemoration ceremonies of the Battle of Vimy Ridge in France during the First World War. To cover expenses, all 36 cadets, eight officers and parent chaperones, their goal is to raise $100,000 for flights, accommodation and other travel costs.

So far they’ve raised $25,000 from various barbecues and previous bottle drives, as well designated driver services and most notably from sponsorships of two parents who biked from Calgary to Kelowna.

“You start talking about this trip and they light up,” said Kara Hughes, head of the cadets’ parents’ committee.

“This trip is a huge opportunity so we want to make available to as many cadets as possible – regardless of their financial situation.”

She said the trip is even more significant since the tunnels and trenches normally closed to the public would be open to the cadets.

The cadets will even get to march in uniform in front of Queen Elizabeth.

People can also leave bottles out front of their home for pickup. Cadets can arrange for alternative pickup times. The cadets are still selling Jack Link’s beef jerky, with funds also going towards the trip.
