Members of the local army cadets group are asking the public for help to send them to the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge.
The 2512 King’s Own Calgary Regiment Royal Canadian Army Cadets are looking for donations to fund their April 2017 trip to the official centenary commemoration ceremonies of the battle in France during the First World War.
In a press release, the group notes the cadets will be part of the largest Canadian military presence in Vimy since the Second World War.
The Battle of Vimy Ridge took place in April 1917. The engagement involved four Canadian divisions – almost 100,000 troops – that managed to capture the ridge from German forces entrenched along the 14-kilometre stretch.
Roughly 3,600 Canadian soldiers died and another 5,000 were wounded during the four-day battle.
All funds raised through this activity will be credited toward the educational tours trip account for the participating cadets.
