As our provincial government continues to "import" firefighters from around the world again, why is our leader overlooking a "ready, fit and able" source right here in Alberta? Why couldn't "Minimum Risk" prisoners sign up for firefighter training in return for reduced sentences, some pay, and rewarding them with a new skill for their efforts when they're done serving?
When I asked Premier Smith this question on her weekly call-in show, she replied she was concerned the felons would be a flight risk. Well, not if GPS technology or other tracking devices are worn (Garmin?).
Perhaps the cost savings and benefits would be worth looking into?
