Letter to the Editor: Secret payment to coal company needs investigation

$137 million paid out in secret to Atrum Coal.

Well this is a surprise coming from a government that says it doesn’t have money to provide 24/7 urgent care to (90,000) Alberta taxpayers. How do you pay this amount of money out in secret? I thought that taxpayer funded expenditures had to be discussed and voted on in the Legislature. What did we taxpayers do to cause us to owe such a large amount of money? Did the dinner that two of the cabinet ministers enjoyed with the coal company have any bearing on the amount? Who are the shareholders that are going to receive this windfall? Are any of them large donors to the UCP, members of caucus, and perish the thought, members of cabinet?

It seems that the company has $6 million worth of clean up to do because of the mess that they have made. Why was the $137 paid out before the clean up? Here is an idea: make them clean up the site, pay them the $6 million and then meet them in court to be sure that we really owe these anonymous investors $137 million.

The Hon. Raymond Wyant the Chief Justice of the Manitoba Provincial Court has probably finished his inquiry into corruption in the Alberta Ministry of Health, why not ask him to look into all these secret payments using our money to foreign coal companies?
