BURNCO Rock Products employees went on strike Aug. 10, walking a picket line in Calgary and Cochrane after a July 30 vote favoured the union’s strike mandate.

BURNCO released a media statement Aug. 10 saying that the company had made the ‘difficult decision to lock out Teamsters Local Union 362’ due to their claim that negotiations had ‘not been progressing in a constructive manner.’

The strike locks out around 100 BURNCO employees working at plants in the Calgary area.

The sand and gravel supply company has a plant in Cochrane, located on River Avenue. The press release states that the company’s representatives met with union members Aug. 4 to review BURNCO’s amended offer, and that the union would hold a vote on the offer Aug. 13.

“BURNCO has a history of negotiating fair and competitive wages, benefits and work conditions,” BURNCO CEO Michael Powell said in the press release. “The current economic environment in Calgary has become more challenging and this is a time when all parties need to be working together to find solutions. We believe that our employees should be given a timely opportunity to vote on our offer.”
