A Calgary resident the RCMP say is responsible for colliding with three vehicles on Highway 1 near Canmore on the weekend, resulting in the injuries to 10 people, has been charged with 19 criminal code offences.
On August 31, Canmore RCMP responded to a multi-vehicle collision in the westbound lanes of Highway 1, near Highway 1A. An investigation revealed that a Ford F250 driven by Sandy Lee Cardinal, a 59 year-old resident of Calgary, crossed the median and collided with three westbound vehicles. A total of ten people were injured, four of which are in serious condition, Canmore RCMP say.
Cardinal has been charged with 19 criminal code offences: 10 counts of impaired driving causing bodily harm and nine counts of dangerous operation causing bodily harm.
After a Judicial Interim Release Hearing, Cardinal was remanded into custody and is set to appear in Alberta Court of Justice in Canmore on Sept. 10, 2025.
