Calgary's Mission Bridge will be closed starting Nov. 1 to vehicular traffic after peak nightime hours, which is approximately 9pm.

According to a statement released by the City on Monday, Mission Bridge will be fully closed to vehicle traffic overnight for about six months. This closure will allow crews to complete necessary rehabilitation work on the vehicle traffic lanes. This closure includes some sidewalk width reductions but pedestrians, wheelers and cyclists will still be able to use the bridge, although cyclists are encouraged to continue dismounting their bikes when crossing the bridge.

Mission Bridge, along 4 Street S.W. at the south end of the Mission District, was originally built in 1915 and was last upgraded in 1987. Major rehabilitation is underway now to help extend the bridge’s lifespan for additional decades to come.

"This three-lane bridge spans the Elbow River and connects the communities of Roxboro and Rideau to the Mission District," says the City of Calgary. "We’re restoring the Mission Bridge so that its life is extended by about 35 years; part of this restoration includes mobility upgrades for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists. The improvements are necessary to ensure the bridge continues to be safe, functional and in good condition for everyone to use. Lighting enhancements, multi-use pathways and traffic signal improvements are some of the improvements this project will bring."

The project is anticipated to take until late 2025 to fully complete, but should be open to two-lane vehicular traffic again by spring.
