The layout of the community and the focus on the success of the Quarry has resulted in a perceived rift between our growing business community and our Historic Downtown businesses. How will you, as a mayor or councillor, foster a business community that is more cohesive?
As I had in 2013, I again reached out to a number of businesses on Main Street. Again, I’ve heard that they feel their needs have not been a priority for this council. It also appears that two of your three main priorities of fixing traffic, controlling debt and better planning could have solved this problem before it began.
As a member of council, I would first want to listen to the businesses in our Historic Main Street. I would then work with these businesses to develop a plan that places measurable timelines to meet their priorities. I’ve heard that a public washroom and a place for RV parking would be critical components to forming a walkable, full day shopping experience for this area.
During this election, I’ve only heard our council members celebrate the success of The Quarry with no mention of the added pressures placed on the businesses located on our historic Main Street.
If council reaches out, listens, plans and acts with these businesses; we will heal any perceived rift and foster a more cohesive business community that benefits all of Cochrane.
