Canada Day in and around Cochrane

Canada Day is almost here and there are a number of family-friendly events in and around Cochrane July 1. The Royal Canadian Legion at the Cochrane branch is hosting a traditional pancake breakfast at 9 a.m.

Canada Day is almost here and there are a number of family-friendly events in and around Cochrane July 1.

The Royal Canadian Legion at the Cochrane branch is hosting a traditional pancake breakfast at 9 a.m. $3 for general admission, $2 for ages six to 14, children under six are free. The Arts and Culture Foundation of Cochrane will provide an interactive mural painting activity as well.

Join the mayor and council, who will be on hand for the 11 a.m. flag raising ceremony at the Legion to start the day’s festivities. Sing along to Canada’s national anthem and be sure to wear red and white. Enjoy complimentary birthday cake and entertainment by the local Cochrane Glee Club.

SummerFest 2015, put on by the Cochrane and Area Events Society, will kick off at the RancheHouse at 11 a.m. Musical performances starting with local artist Sydney Mae and followed by multiple shows from Taiko Drummers and Low Tide will go from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Along with the music, families can enjoy hula hooping (11 a.m. to 3 p.m.), face painting (12 p.m. to 4 p.m.), pony rides (11 a.m. to 5 p.m.), miniature golf (all day) and many more activities.

People can have their pick of mini-donuts, ice cream, hot dogs, hamburgers and many more tasty treats.

Following SummerFest, the gates will open at 4:30 p.m. for the 16th annual Canada Day Family Festival at Mitford Park.

Performances by party-cover favourite Famous Players Band, Lucas Chaisson and country pop-roots duo PEAR begin 5 p.m. Free Kids Zone and Canadian Tire Jumpstart Games will also be available, and fireworks will be on display at dusk. Tickets are $10 and can be bought online at brownpapertickets.com; children 12 and under are free.

Shuttle pick-up is available every half hour from 4 to 10 p.m. at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church (43015 George Fox Trail), Centre Avenue at Bow Street, near the new Canadian Tire construction (on the east side of Centre Avenue on the Quarry site), Holy Spirit School (129 Powell St.), Cochrane Alliance Church (902 Glenbow Dr.), Cochrane Ranche site (Hwy 1A, east of Hwy 22), and St. Timothy School (501 Sunset Dr.).

Due to size and limited resources, this event is primarily for Redwood Meadows’ residents.

Start the day with the annual Redwood Meadows Emergency Services bike parade for the whole family – come out at 9:30 a.m. to decorate the bikes.

Enjoy a barbecue, beer garden, live music and a food truck.

Kids can enjoy a magic show, face painting, balloon twisting, henna tattoos and giant garden games in the sports field.

Youth can visit the skate park, which will feature music by local DJs starting at 2 p.m.

A tea party will be set up on the patio to celebrate seniors and the 50th anniversary of the flag. Have some birthday cake and sign up for the volleyball tournament in the afternoon. Then, come back for the annual fireworks in the park at 11 p.m.

Families can enjoy the Canada Day parade at 9 a.m. on the east side of Cremona School, which will be hosted by Water Valley Boots and Saddle Club.

There will be a pancake breakfast until 10 a.m. Visitors can enjoy face painting, family races at the ball diamond bake sale, children’s carnival, tractor pull, blow-up obstacle course at the arena pony races, laser tag, a ball tournament and fireworks. Popcorn and snow cones will be provided by Country Fellowship Church.

Art in the Park will also be happening alongside the Canada Day festivities. Artists, musicians, bakers, crafters will be on hand to showcase their works.
