The Chinook Film Group is wrapping up after another successful season.
It has been showing independent and alternative films in Cochrane since 2004.
Starting in September through to April, the group shows one movie the third Wednesday of every month at the Cochrane Movie House. Depending on the film, attendance varies from 50 to 150 people.
“It really depends on the buzz of the film and how much people know about it before we bring it,” said Murray Mitchell with the group.
The group attends and consults with various film festivals in order to select its feature movies.
“We’re invited to the Calgary Film Fest every year, four of us generally attend and we can see up to 30 or 40 films between all of us. Also the Toronto Film Fest has a division called Film Circuit and their job is to promote and circulate alternative and independent films to smaller groups across Canada – that’s who we do our booking with,” Mitchell explained.
They also do their best to check online reviews of each film and preview it themselves before the showing.
Mitchell said the group’s films are a good option for people who want a change from seeing blockbuster films from large distributors.
“Usually our films have a more involved story, there’s more character development, the subject matter might be a little more challenging,” Mitchell said.
