Cochrane author, Dove, awarded silver medal in literary contest

A Cochrane author is celebrating after her book was awarded silver in the 2013 Literary Classics Book Awards.

Lynn Dove, a best-selling author from Cochrane, found out Thanksgiving weekend that her book Love the Wounded — part of her Wounded trilogy — was recognized by the annual awards in the faith-based, young-adult category.

The award was unexpected, said the author, a substitute teacher.

“This book was the end of the trilogy, so I wanted to make sure it went out on a high note,” said Dove. “But at the same time, it was the last book of the trilogy, so I wasn’t expecting much. I was just thrilled to be a finalist.”

She received the good news in a newsletter that arrived the weekend of Oct. 12-14. She said this is the highest level of recognition any of her books have received.

Love the Wounded is the third and final installment of the Wounded trilogy. The trilogy follows the lives of fictional characters — youth and young adults — as they navigate and overcome a journey riddled with bullying, lies, teenage pregnancy and violence.

More than accumulating awards, Dove said she wrote the books to spread the anti-bullying message. She said she was bullied as a child, as were all three of her children.

“I wanted to make sure kids know they don’t have to take bullying,” said Dove. “They can say something — they need to speak up. I had to get that message out, in book form.”

While a representative of the Literary Classics Book Awards said judge’s comments or scores could not be released, only the books that receive at least a score of four out of five points are sent to the awards department.

“All of our reviewers and judges use a rubric for scoring,” said Dianna Fuchs, executive director of Literary Classics Book Awards and Reviews. “If a book does not meet the minimum score to meet our requirements, that book will not be considered for the award.”

Winning the gold award was The School of Ministry: The Windgate, by Braxton A. Cosby, nephew of comedian Bill Cosby. Dove’s books can be purchased online, as well as through Amazon. For more, visit shootthewounded.org.
