COCHRANE—Cochrane BMX has opened its registration for the season and is aiming to provide riders with a full season, including the possibility of hosting provincials right here in Cochrane.

“We are planning for as normal of a season as we can get, but of course it all depends on restrictions,” said president of Cochrane BMX Marcie Dazis.

This year, unlike last year the club will be offering coaching sessions and organized races, as long as public health measures permit those activities, she said.

“We are going to be offering coaching and training times this year. We weren’t able to do that last year, but we are going to be doing some coaching, training and we will be doing some races as well. Again, we’re going to have to wait and see how many races we are allowed to have on the track at a time, but we are committed to having some form of racing,” Dazis said.

She added there will be plenty of open track time for riders to get out on their bikes to get some fresh air and exercise.

Coaching sessions will be available on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and the open track and racing sessions will be commencing on Mondays and Wednesdays. On Saturdays, the track will also be open to riders as well.

Dazis also said the club is slated to host a provincial BMX race this year.

“If restrictions allow, we are supposed to be hosting a provincial race,” she said. “Right now, we’re trying to be creative on how we can make this happen. We were supposed to do it last year, but of course, we had to cancel.”

She said the club is working with the other tracks in Alberta to figure out how to host the race in a format that will be efficient enough that it can be done over the course of a weekend.

Cochrane BMX is also bringing back two-time Olympian Tory Nyhaug for another summer camp session in June and will host an all-girls summer camp in July or August.

The exact dates are yet to be determined.

Registration opened on March 8 and riders will be able to join Cochrane BMX at any point during the season.
