Cochrane Chaos soar above Eagles on the road

The Cochrane AJFHL team continues to reign supreme over the league's south division, and overall, following the holiday break.

The Cochrane Chaos are riding high on a 13-game winning streak, earning their last two victories against the second-best south division Lethbridge Eagles.

The Alberta Junior Female Hockey League teams sent each other off with a game before the holiday break Dec. 18 and welcomed each other back on the ice in Lethbridge Jan. 9.

"There was some breakdowns that don't typically happen but it was the same on both sides," said Chaos head coach Derek Loomer of their most recent match. "It was good to come out on the right end of that score."

Despite dealing with a bit of holiday rink rust and missing players, the Chaos came out on top 4-3.

The Eagles kicked off the first period with a goal at the five-minute mark, which Chaos forward Faith Greenough answered back before long with her first goal of the season, with assistant captain Summer Gibbons on the assist.

The Eagles led the game after the second period, netting two more before the end, including a power play goal from a tripping penalty.

Forward Kari Pedder was the sole scorer for the Chaos in the second, with Autumn Kehler's help tipping the puck off.

The Cochrane team sealed the deal in the third period with a goal four-minutes in courtesy of Autumn Kehler, assisted by Kari Pedder and Carly Wlad, and a final goal from Alexis Smith, assisted by call-in Rowan Bremner.

Originally from Cochrane, Bremner currently plays defence for the AFHL U18 AA Airdrie Lightning.

Loomer said this is the fifth time the Chaos have called on her to play for the team when they were short because she jives well with the other players.

"She set up our winning goal with a very nice pass out of the zone and played a really solid game," he said.

The Chaos were short players following the holidays due to work commitments, injuries, and some who were out sick.

"We have some illnesses where girls are not coming in right now," said Loomer. "With COVID, if the girls are feeling sick, they're not supposed to be coming out.

"They're staying away from the rink if they've got the sniffles."

The Chaos face off against the Calgary Titans next at WinSport Arena Jan. 15. Their next home game is not until Jan. 28, when they will take on the Calgary Jags.
