As the dry season fast approaches, the Town of Cochrane advances its wildfire mitigation efforts to build a more resilient community.
In a recent press release, the Town announced Phase 2 of its Community FireSmart program is now underway, with targeted fuel management and risk reduction strategies focused on high-priority areas across the community.
Final cleanup efforts are nearing completion in Bow Ridge, Crawford Ranch, Riviera, and Lofts on the Bow, with additional work scheduled in Cochrane Heights, above the Cochrane Ranche. Special precautions will be taken to protect the Grandfather Tree area, ensuring this cherished community space remains fire-resilient and safeguarded.
“Every action we take today builds a stronger, safer tomorrow,” said Cochrane Fire Chief Shawn Polley. “This is about more than just clearing brush-- it’s about standing together as a community and taking meaningful steps to protect what matters most. FireSmart is how we take control, prepare, and build a Cochrane that’s ready for anything.”
Launched in February, Cochrane’s Community FireSmart Program has made considerable progress, guided by FireSmart Alberta’s seven principles. The initiative empowers residents with practical tools to reduce wildfire risk-- including vegetation management, debris clearing, and the use of fire-resistant building materials.
As part of a broader climate-resilience approach, the Town is also encouraging water-wise landscaping and drought-tolerant practices, helping homeowners adapt to environmental changes while supporting wildfire prevention and water conservation.
Town of Cochrane believes that a culture of preparedness and sustainability can only be achieved if the community rallies behind the initiative.
“Lasting resilience depends on the collective efforts of everyone,” reads the release.
